Clive Daley reports from Suzhou, China.
As the 90-day pause on inflated tariffs nears its August 12 expiry, optimism in China and the rest of the world, is in short supply.
Manufacturers and exporters in China are pushing shipments to U.S. ports before the window closes, leading to a surge in outbound cargo. The rush will certainly create a ripple effect, not just for China and the U.S., but for global trade as a whole.
Although pulling production forward may lead to a temporary lull in factory output in the coming months, it will also create open capacity across manufacturing lines.
“As we saw during the COVID-19 pandemic, this kind of surge can drive up costs and introduce fresh delays into an already fragile global supply chain” said Category Director from large UK Retailer.
The current environment remains highly uncertain, and the lack of confidence in American intentions could cast a long shadow over trade relations well beyond this summer.
